أُخرجت من المدرسة في الثالثة عشرة وأُبقيت في البيت في نابلس كما كان يُفعل ببنات طبقتها. فعلّمها أخوها إبراهيم، وهو شاعر أيضاً، سراً من العائلة: العروض والبحور والأداة كلها. ونشرت رغم ذلك، وكتبت صراحةً عن رغبة المرأة حين لم يكن أحد يفعل، وعاشت بعد كل رجل حاول إسكاتها. ويُروى أن موشيه ديان قال إن قصيدة لها تصنع عشرين فدائياً.
Taken out of school at thirteen and kept at home in Nablus, as girls of her class were. Her brother Ibrahim, himself a poet, taught her privately behind the family's back — prosody, classical metre, the whole apparatus. She published anyway, wrote openly about a woman's desire when almost nobody did, and outlived every man who had tried to keep her quiet. Moshe Dayan reportedly said one of her poems could make twenty commandos.
أخوها إبراهيم كتب كلمات موطني، وهو اليوم نشيد العراق الوطني وكان نشيد فلسطين غير الرسمي عقوداً.
Her brother Ibrahim wrote the words to Mawtini, which is now the national anthem of Iraq and was Palestine's unofficial one for decades.
