وُلد في حي الطالبية بالقدس، ودرس في القاهرة ثم برنستون وهارفارد، وكان أستاذاً في كولومبيا أربعين سنة. وقال كتابه الاستشراق إن الغرب أنتج الشرق موضوعاً للدرس والسيطرة بدل أن يصفه، فغيّر عدة حقول أكاديمية دفعة واحدة. وكان عازف بيانو جاداً وكتب نقداً موسيقياً، وأسس مع دانييل بارنبويم أوركسترا من موسيقيين عرب وإسرائيليين.
Born in the Talbiya quarter of Jerusalem, schooled in Cairo, then Princeton and Harvard, and a professor at Columbia for forty years. His book Orientalism argued that the West had produced the East as an object of study and control rather than describing it, and it changed several academic fields at once. He was also a serious pianist and wrote music criticism, and with Daniel Barenboim founded an orchestra of Arab and Israeli musicians.
وصف نفسه بأنه خارج المكان دائماً: ليس عربياً بما يكفي في أمريكا ولا أمريكياً بما يكفي في غيرها. واتخذ العبارة عنواناً لمذكراته.
He described himself as always out of place — never quite Arab enough in America, never quite American enough anywhere else. He used the phrase as the title of his memoir.
