اسمه العلمي Cinnyris osea. طوله نحو أحد عشر سنتيمتراً بالذيل، وأربعة منه معاً أخف من بيضة. ويبدو الذكر أسود حتى تصيبه الشمس، فيصير أخضر معدنياً ثم بنفسجياً ثم برونزياً بحسب الزاوية، واللون ليس صبغة أصلاً بل بنية الريشة وهي تكسر الضوء. ويتغذى على الرحيق بمنقار معقوف ويستطيع أن يرفرف واقفاً أمام الزهرة كالطائر الطنان، وإن لم يكن قريبه.
Cinnyris osea. About eleven centimetres including the tail, and light enough that four of them together weigh less than an egg. The male looks black until the sun hits him, at which point he turns metallic green, then violet, then bronze depending on the angle — the colour is not pigment at all but the structure of the feather bending light. He feeds on nectar through a curved bill and can hover in front of a flower like a hummingbird, though he is not related to one.

The nest is a hanging purse of grass and spider silk, and the female builds it alone in about ten days. Sunbirds are one of the few wild things that have gone on nesting through everything, in gardens in Gaza as much as in Nablus.
