الوادي أسفل بيت جالا، كثيف بالكروم والزيتون والمشمش، منثور فيه القصور، وهي بيوت حقلية حجرية مستديرة كانت العائلات تنام فيها أيام القطاف كي لا تعود إلى البيت. بعضها عمره ألفا سنة وما زال قائماً بلا ملاط. وعلى امتداد الوادي مطاعم مزارع صغيرة، والغداء فيها ما قُطف ذلك الصباح. وهو على بعد عشرين دقيقة مشياً من بيت لحم، ولا يكاد أحد ممن يقيمون في بيت لحم يعرف بوجوده.
The valley below Beit Jala, thick with grape vines, olives and apricots, and dotted with qusur — round stone field-houses where families slept during the harvest so they did not have to walk home. Some are two thousand years old and still standing without mortar. There are small farm restaurants along the valley where lunch is whatever was picked that morning. It is a twenty-minute walk from Bethlehem and almost nobody staying in Bethlehem knows it is there.
