سيلزمك أن تنحني. المدخل الرئيسي هو باب التواضع، خُفض إلى نحو متر ونصف في العهد العثماني كي لا يدخل أحد على فرسه ولا تُدخل عربات النهب. اعتدل فتجد نفسك في بازيليكا من القرن السادس بناها جستنيان، وهي من أقدم الكنائس على الأرض التي لم ينقطع استعمالها، لأن الفرس الذين أحرقوا كل شيء سنة ٦١٤ استثنوها حين رأوا فسيفساء المجوس بالزي الفارسي فعرفوا فيها أنفسهم. انظر إلى الأرض: أبواب سرية تُفتح على فسيفساء من القرن الرابع من كنيسة قسطنطين الأولى. ويُنزل إلى المغارة بدرجين، والنجمة الفضية ذات الأربعة عشر رأساً تعلّم الموضع. وتأمل الأعمدة، فعليها رسوم قديسين من زمن الصليبيين ما زالت باهتة، وقد أعاد ترميم العقد الماضي ملائكة الفسيفساء الذهبية التي لم يرها أحد منذ قرون.

You will have to stoop. The main entrance is the Door of Humility, cut down to a metre and a half in Ottoman times so that nobody could ride a horse inside and looters could not drive carts through. Straighten up and you are in a sixth-century basilica — Justinian's, and one of the oldest churches on earth still in continuous use, because the Persians who burned everything else in 614 spared it when they saw a mosaic of the Magi in Persian dress and recognised their own. Look at the floor: trapdoors open onto fourth-century mosaic from Constantine's original church. The grotto below is reached by two staircases, and the fourteen-point silver star marks the traditional spot. Notice the columns — Crusader-era paintings of saints are still faintly on them, and restoration in the 2010s brought back gold mosaic angels nobody had seen for centuries.

لماذا هذا الاسم؟ · Why this name?

بيت لحم بالعربية بيتُ اللحم، وبالعبرية بيت الخبز. والاسمان من جذر كنعاني واحد هو ل-ح-م بمعنى الطعام عموماً، وربما من لحمو، وهو إله رافدي عُبد هنا قبل وصول اللغتين. أطعمت البلدة الناس تحت ثلاثة أسماء قبل أن تشتهر بمولد.

Bethlehem is Bayt Lahm in Arabic — 'house of meat'; and Beit Lehem in Hebrew — 'house of bread'. Both descend from the same Canaanite root l-h-m, which meant food generally, and possibly from Lahmu, a Mesopotamian deity worshipped here long before either language arrived. The town fed people under three names before it was famous for a birth.
