أوطأ يابسة مكشوفة على الأرض، أكثر من أربعمئة متر تحت سطح البحر وتنخفض نحو متر كل سنة مع انحسار الماء. ونسبة الملح نحو عشرة أضعاف المحيط، ولهذا تطفو دون محاولة، ولهذا يتقشّر الشاطئ بتكوينات ملحية تشبه المرجان. وخلفه ترتفع الجروف مباشرة إلى صحراء القدس، وكهوف مخطوطات البحر الميت في قمران على مسافة قصيرة شمالاً. لا تضع وجهك في الماء ولا تحلق في ذلك الصباح.
The lowest exposed land on earth, more than four hundred metres below sea level and dropping by about a metre a year as the water shrinks. The salt content is around ten times the ocean, which is why you float without trying and why the shore is crusted with salt formations that look like coral. Behind it the cliffs rise straight up to the Judean desert, and the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found at Qumran are a short drive north. Do not put your face in the water and do not shave that morning.
سُمّي البحر الميت لأن لا شيء يعيش فيه. ومن أسمائه العربية القديمة بحر لوط، نسبة إلى قصة المدن التي يقال إنها كانت في طرفه الجنوبي.
Called the dead sea because nothing lives in it. Older Arabic names include Bahr Lut, the sea of Lot, after the story of the cities said to have stood at its southern end.
اذهب باكراً أو متأخراً، فالظهيرة في الصيف خطرة فعلاً. واغتسل بماء عذب فور خروجك.
Go early or late; midday in summer is genuinely dangerous. Rinse in fresh water straight after.
