أقدم وأكبر جوامع غزة، في قلب البلدة القديمة، ومئذنته كانت أعلى ما في الأفق قروناً. وقد ضمت مكتبته يوماً من أهم المخطوطات في فلسطين. وحوله ضمّت البلدة القديمة قصر الباشا، وهو مبنى مملوكي يقال إن نابليون نزل فيه، وكنيسة القديس برفيريوس، من أقدم كنائس العالم وما زالت تخدم مسيحيي غزة، وسوق الزاوية. وكانت غزة مدينة قوافل وآخر محطات طريق البخور قبل أن تكون أي شيء آخر بزمن طويل.
The oldest and largest mosque in Gaza, at the heart of the old city, with a minaret that was the tallest thing on the skyline for centuries. Its library once held some of the most important manuscripts in Palestine. Around it the old city held Qasr al-Basha, a Mamluk building where Napoleon is said to have stayed, the Church of Saint Porphyrius — one of the oldest churches in the world, still serving Gaza's Christian community — and the Zawiya market. Gaza was a caravan city, the last stop of the Incense Road, long before it was anything else.
سُمّي على الخليفة عمر. وتاريخ المبنى طبقات: موضع معبد فلستي، ثم كنيسة بيزنطية، ثم الجامع، ثم كاتدرائية صليبية، ثم جامع من جديد.
Named for the caliph Umar. The building's history is a stack: a Philistine temple site, then a Byzantine church, then the congregational mosque, then a Crusader cathedral, then a mosque again.
