تتسلق حيفا جبل الكرمل مدرجات، والمدينة الفلسطينية في أسفلها. ووادي النسناس حي عامل من بيوت حجرية وسوق خضار وأفران وملاحم، وعلى جدرانه وبين أزقته أعمال فنية. هذه مدينة إميل حبيبي الذي تدور رواياته في هذه الشوارع، ومدينة الحركة العمالية الفلسطينية في الميناء أسفلها. انزل من المستعمرة الألمانية واشترِ شيئاً من السوق وابحث عن اللوحات على البيوت القديمة. وللمدينة حياة يومية مختلطة على نحو غير معتاد، وأهلها سيقولون لك إنها معقدة.
Haifa climbs Mount Carmel in terraces, and the Palestinian city sits at the bottom of it. Wadi Nisnas is a working neighbourhood of stone houses, a vegetable market, bakeries and butchers, with art installed on the walls and across the alleys. This was the city of Emile Habibi, whose novels are set in these streets, and of the Palestinian labour movement in the port below. Walk down from the German Colony, buy something in the market, and look for the plaques on the old houses. The city has an unusually mixed daily life and people here will tell you it is complicated.
حيفا قد تكون من هيفاء أي الممشوقة الجميلة، أو من اسم آرامي أقدم. ووادي النسناس، أي وادي المخلوق الذي يرد في حكايات الناس، هو الحي الذي استمرت فيه حيفا الفلسطينية بعد ١٩٤٨.
Haifa may come from hayfa, meaning slender or beautiful, or from an older Aramaic name. Wadi Nisnas — the valley of the nisnas, a creature from folk stories — is the quarter where Palestinian Haifa continued after 1948.
