أكبر مدينة فلسطينية داخل حدود ١٩٤٨، وأكثر مدينة استمرت فيها الحياة المدينية الفلسطينية بشكل كامل. وكنيسة البشارة أكبر كنائس الشرق الأوسط، بُنيت فوق مغارة، وفي ساحتها لوحات للعذراء أرسلتها دول من كل العالم، كل واحدة ترسمها من أهلها. وأسفلها يلتف السوق القديم بين بيوت عثمانية، وفي وسطه الجامع الأبيض من سنة ١٧٨٥. وقد كانت الناصرة مركزاً للسياسة والشعر والنشر الفلسطيني قرناً كاملاً.
The largest Palestinian city inside the 1948 lines, and the one where Palestinian urban life continued most fully. The Basilica of the Annunciation is the biggest church in the Middle East, built over a grotto, and its courtyard is lined with Madonna panels sent from countries all over the world — each one painting her as local. Below it the old souk winds through Ottoman houses, and the White Mosque of 1785 sits in the middle of it. Nazareth has been a centre of Palestinian politics, poetry and publishing for a century.
من الآرامية نتسرات، وربما من جذر يعني المراقبة والحراسة، أي قرية مرصد على حافة. وكلمة النصارى العربية من الاسم نفسه.
From the Aramaic natsrat, possibly from a root meaning to watch or guard — a lookout village on a ridge. The Arabic word for Christians, nasara, comes from the same name.

The souk is quiet on Sundays. Ask for a knafeh at the top of the market, then walk down.
