البحيرة العذبة الوحيدة في فلسطين، على عمق مئتي متر تحت سطح البحر، تحيط بها تلال تصفرّ في الصيف. وكانت طبريا بلدة فلسطينية للحمامات المعدنية وصيد السمك والحمضيات، وما زال اسمها العربي اسماً للبحيرة كلها في كل بلد عربي. والحمامات في الشاطئ الجنوبي تُستعمل منذ العهد الروماني ويخرج ماؤها من الأرض بنحو ستين درجة. وعند البحيرة يقع كثير من حكاية الجليل، فهي عند المسيحيين مسرح معظم رواية الإنجيل، وكفرناحوم والطابغة على شاطئها الشمالي.
Palestine's only freshwater lake, two hundred metres below sea level, ringed by hills that go gold in summer. Tiberias was a Palestinian town of hot springs, fishing and citrus, and its Arabic name still names the whole lake in every Arab country. The hot springs on the southern shore have been used since Roman times and the water comes out of the ground at around sixty degrees. The lake is where a great deal of the Galilee's story happens — for Christians it is where most of the Gospel narrative is set, and Capernaum and Tabgha are on the northern shore.
أسسها هيرودس أنتيباس وسماها على الإمبراطور طيباريوس. واحتفظت العربية بالاسم الروماني طبريا، والفلسطينيون يسمون البحيرة باسم المدينة لا العكس.
The city was founded by Herod Antipas and named for the emperor Tiberius. Arabic kept the Roman name as Tabariyya, and Palestinians call the lake by the city rather than the city by the lake.
كُل سمك البحيرة مشوياً على الشاطئ. والسباحة أسهل في الربيع والخريف.
Eat the lake fish grilled on the shore. Swimming is easiest in spring and autumn.
